Contents and goals of the inter-municipal cooperation ‘union of municipalities and communities of grammos – grammos.net’

Welcome to portal Grammos.net.

The convention of the Inter-Municipal Cooperation of the Local Authorities (L.A.s) of Grammos – GRAMMOS.NET was signed on December 6th, 2005, by the Municipalities of Agia Triada, Nestorio, Mesopotamia, Akrites and the Communities of Grammos, Arrennes and Kastrakio.

The content and goals of the inter-municipal cooperation “GRAMMOS.NET” is directly connected to the Invitation no. 147 of the Operational Programme IS (Informational Society) regarding the implementation of “Actions for the Developing Applications of Pilot and Innovative Nature”, and i.e., for the sub-classes:

  • SubClass 1.2 – Actions for Culture and Tourism
  • SubClass 1.3 – Actions for Public Administration – Actions for Information and Awareness
  • SubClass 1.5 – Actions for the Environment

All seven L.A.s have decided to establish the latter Union to fully harness the potentials mountain area, in order to create the necessary conditions for development, enhancement of the (already under pressure) dynamics for economy and development, reversing the feeling of abandonment and reinstatement in the national productive fabric, while believing that the utilization of this area is directly connected to the preservation of the natural environment of Grammos and its effective promotion.

For these reasons, the seven collaborating L.A.s, having the protection of the natural environment and the sustainable administration of the area as their primary goal, have work together for the implementation of an Integrated Programme for the Administration, Protection and Promotion of the mountain area of Grammos.

The Programme GRAMMOS.NET consists of an Integrated Administration, Protection and Promotion System of Grammos, for the implementation of coordinated actions for monitoring and administering the mountain area, protecting the natural environment and effectively promoting of Grammos in Greece and worldwide, as follows:

  • Creates a Geodatabase including the vector geographical data for the total of the mountain area (895,000 hectares),
  • Installs the Informational System (i.e., the geodatabase) in the Operational Centre,
  • Trains the necessary personnel for using and updating the Informational System,
  • Acquires the necessary hardware, software and applications for the proper and trouble-free operation of the Operational Centre and networking with the L.A.s of ‘GRAMMOS.NET’ Union,
  • Publishes the data in an internet portal, allowing visits through the world wide web, and provides services for the L.A.s, the agencies in charge for the management of natural disasters and the potential visitors of the area,
  • Informs and sensitizes the local population for the actions of administration and protection of the natural environment and familiarizes the latter with the innovative technologies that uses,
  • Creates printed and digital material for the propagation of the programme and the promotion the mountain area.

The project is expected to facilitate to the rejuvenation of the area with the Union GRAMMOS.NET having an active role in the administration of the mountain, the effective contribution in the actions of protecting the natural environment and mainly the dynamic post-evolution of the wealth of the mountain area to a hub for the development of the extended area.
